Solvent effects in the photophysics and -chemistry of bio-molecules
In this project the influence of solvents, especially water, on the photophysics and the resulting atomic-scale chemical dynamics of small bio-molecules in the gas phase shall be investigated. Pure samples of individual small solvated-molecule clusters will be prepared using frontier molecular beam approaches and the electric deflector. Here, these samples and their photo induced dynamics will be investigated using short-wavelength radiation facilities, such as EuXFEL, FLASH, PETRA III, or MAX IV. Furthermore, experiments at laser based strong-field and high-harmonic sources are foreseen. The planned investigations include bio-chromophores such as the indole-water and pyrrole-water heterodimers as well as larger clusters. The systems will be excited by laser-light to trigger the photophysics and subsequent ultrafast dynamics. Novel probe schemes/imaging methods will be developed to study the evolution of such systems on the involved corrugated potential energy surfaces.
