Doctoral project

Nonlinear optics using multi-pass guiding concepts

In my PhD thesis at the DESY laser group, I focus on the physics of nonlinear optics within multi-pass geometries. My main project is the development of new multi-pass cell (MPC)-based laser pulse post compression schemes, where I work on overcoming limitations in current MPC technology. Part of my work is to develop and test new types of MPCs, which allow post-compression of high-energy laser pulses of up to 100 mJ or higher from picoseconds to 10s of femtoseconds pulse duration. At the same time, the aim is to keep the setup at a compact, table-top size.

While MPC post-compression is my main project, I also work on employing effects from nonlinear optics such as e.g. (high-)harmonic-generation or four-wave-mixing in gases (or other materials) into multi-pass cells. This can potentially increase the efficiency of these processes and further push towards more efficient light sources in a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum. With the development and advance of laser-mirror coating technology, an even wider range of processes and wavelengths may become applicable to multi-pass cells in the future, providing a great manifold of physics and nonlinear optics to be studied within the context of MPCs.
